THE TRAGEDIE OF ANTHONIE, AND CLEOPATRA (ca.1606–07)

The First Folio is the sole authority for this play. The print house copy appears to have been a transcript of Shakespeare’s foul papers.

X AXIS (abscisses): 3637 lines

Subdivisions of ACTS & SCENES are resolutely NOT in the FOLIO. Locations of ACTS 2 to 4 are by Rowe (1709) and ACT 5 by Pope (1728)

Indeed, there are such an INORDINATE number of SCENES (42 of them! once again established by Dyce in 1857), that I am sorely tempted to LEAVE THEM OUT of our initial graph. In part, to see if Dyce’s subdivision is indeed justified.

1.1: line 1 (reads “Act 1 scene 1 begins at line 1″)
1.2: line 77
1.3: line 298
1.4: line 428
1.5: line 523

2.1: line 614

2.2: line 678

2.3: line 963

2.4: line 1011

2.5: line 1024

2.6: line 1175

2.7: line 1333

3.1: line 1494

3.2: line 1538

3.3: line 1620

3.4: line 1684

3.5: line 1726

3.6: line 1751

3.7: line 1858

3.8: line 1960

3.9: line 1968

3.10: line 1974

3.11: line 2023

3.12: line 2107

3.13: line 2152

4.1: line 2389

4.2: line 2409

4.3: line 2467

4.4: line 2502

4.5: line 2552

4.6: line 2575

4.7: line 2621

4.8: line 2647

4.9: line 2694

4.10: line 2736

4.11: line 2747

4.12: line 2752

4.13: line 2809

4.14: line 2822

4.15: line 2996

5.1: line 3107

5.2: line 3200

As far as I can tell, the action of the three first scenes (1.1–3) is most likely continuous. As would be, it seems to me, those of 2.2–4, 2.6–7, 3.4–5, & 4.13–14. As usual with Shakespeare, the two battles — ACTIUM (3.7–10) & ALEXANDRIA (5.5–12) — would have been worked (i.e. rehearsed) as continuous stage units. This reduces the number of scenes from 42 to a workable 25.
