PLAY WITHIN THE PLAY (or SCENE WITHIN THE SCENE)

There is also a rather strange bit of “play-acting” in 4.1 where ROSALIND disguised as Ganimede “acts” the part of ROSALIND for the benefit of ORLANDO. Hence, as not a few commentators have noted, a boy actor plays a girl (Rosalind) who plays a boy (Ganimede) who plays a girl (Rosalind). This event certainly warants some form of framing: (1945,2107)

AS YOU LIKE IT (ca.1599–1600)

PLOTS & COLOURING

The play can be more or less broken up according to its two principal “locations”:

• the COURT of Duke Frederick for the entirety of ACT 1 as well as for scenes 2.2 & 3.1;

&

• the FOREST of Arden (i.e. Ardennes) for the remainder of the play.

Hence, 17 out of 22 scenes take place in a PASTORAL setting (complete with “shepherds”)

The play ends in a quadruple marriage, hence the four pairs of lovers perhaps need be matched accordingly:

ORLANDO / ROSALIND

CELIA / OLIVER

TOUCHSTONE / AUDREY

SILVIUS / PHEBE

___________

METATHEATRE

As mentioned above in the ENTRANCES & EXITS, two characters are “disguised”

ROSALIND: DISGUISED as a Ganimede: (781,2681)

CELIA: DISGUISED as Aliena: (781,2681)
