THE LIFE OF KING HENRY THE FIFT (ca. 1598–99)

The play was first published as a “bad” Quarto in 1600, which was reprinted in 1602 (Q2) and 1619 (Q3). Copy was a memorial reconstruction of performances.

F provides the authoritative version. Print house copy was Shakespeare’s foul papers (with some consultation of Q3).

__________

X AXIS (abscisses): 3381 lines

F gives ACTS only

PROLOGUE : line 1 (reads “Prologue begins at line 1″)
ACT 1 : line 36
ACT 2 : line 462
ACT 3 : line 1044
ACT 4 : line 1788
ACT 5 : line 2849
EPILOGUE : line 3367

NOTA : The above act-division is the correct one (since the character of the CHORUS enters at the beginning of each new act). But it is not the act-division of the FOLIO, which is (obviously) imperfect. As Oxford editor Gary Taylor writes in the TEXTUAL COMPANION “Acts 1 and 5 [in the FOLIO] are correctly indicated, but there is no division before the second speech of the CHORUS [lines 462–504]. As a result of this oversight, the FOLIO marks Acts 3 and 4 as 2 and 3, and begins its Act 4 at line 2523, a clearly impossible arrangement “.

The standard SCENE-division (as a whole) was established by Capell (1768)
